Pro Arte Musical recibe la Navidad con un tributo a la versatilidad del instrumento nacional

 

San Juan, P.R. | 28 de noviembre de 2023 - Pro Arte Musical inicia la temporada navideña con la serie de conciertos, El Cuatro Puertorriqueño: Clásico y Contemporáneo, a celebrarse en dos fechas, el sábado 2 de diciembre a las 7:30 p.m., y el domingo 3 de diciembre a las 4:00 p.m., en la Sala de Drama René Marqués del Centro de Bellas Artes (CBA) de Santurce.

En esta serie de conciertos, el cuatro puertorriqueño se convertirá en el protagonista en manos de los maestros y jóvenes intérpretes: Emma Colón Zayas, Orlando Laureano, Fabiola Mari Méndez, Pablo Hernández, Benjamín Laboy, Ramón Vázquez y Luis Sanz. Los cuatristas estarán acompañados por el guitarrista Eduardo Maldonado, los percusionistas Edgar Maldonado y Héctor Barez, y con la participación especial de los trovadores Jovino González Rodríguez y Francisco “Cholo” Rosado.

“El cuatro puertorriqueño es un instrumento muy versátil. Escuchar piezas clásicas para música de cámara, tocadas por el cuatro, el tiple, la guitarra y la bordonúa, es un deleite, ¡toda una experiencia sonora de coloridos matices que hay que escuchar!”, comentó el experimentado músico, cuatrista y director musical, Orlando Laureano.

Los músicos interpretarán piezas del repertorio clásico y contemporáneo universal de compositores como Mozart, Chopin, Bach, Purcell, Piazzola y de los boricuas Juan Morel Campos, Juan Ríos Ovalle, Fabiola Méndez y Luis Sanz. La danza y la música navideña puertorriqueña, con estampas de aguinaldos y seises, también dirán presente durante ambas presentaciones.

 

“Con estos dos conciertos inspirados en los aires clásicos y navideños, Pro Arte Musical vuelve a proponer un programa innovador para celebrar al instrumento nacional”, dijo por su parte, Karen Schneck Malaret, directora interina de Pro Arte Musical. “El programa hará un recorrido entre diferentes épocas y estilos, entre lo clásico y lo moderno, comenzado con la interpretación de música de cámara, pasando por obras de compositores barrocos y clásicos, para luego llegar a la danza puertorriqueña y la interpretación de piezas nuevas creadas por jóvenes compositores, en una tarde festiva donde se demostrará la versatilidad del cuatro y sus infinitas posibilidades interpretativas”, añadió Schneck Malaret.

The internationally acclaimed duo featuring saxophonist/composer Miguel Zenón and pianist Luis Perdomo has earned a 2024 Grammy® nomination in the category of “Best Latin Jazz Album” for their widely lauded duo album El Arte Del Bolero Vol. 2.

The title references the beauty of the Latin-American Songbook and the Bolero in particular. The album expands on the initial concept of El Arte Del Bolero Vol. 1 while maintaining the intent of playing songs the artists know and love. The process of choosing the repertoire began with the question, “Tu sabes que canción es bien buena?” (“You know which song is really good?”). Discussions about which versions to study, which keys to use, and which arrangements were the most inspirational followed.

Melding their jazz sensibilities with the original spirit of the music, Zenón and Perdomo deliver alluring, forward-thinking performances while keeping the songs center stage. “The Latin-American Songbook is so vast and varied that it naturally lends itself to limitless explorations,” says Zenón in the liner notes. “We purposely looked beyond the Caribbean (exploring composers from México, Venezuela and Panamá, for example) because we wanted to emphasize the point that these songs deserved to be explored and recognized for what they are, beyond labels, categories and regionalisms. Just beautiful music that is a joy to perform and listen to.”

About Miguel Zenón

A multiple Grammy® nominee and Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow, Zenón is one of a select group of musicians who have masterfully balanced and blended the often-contradictory poles of innovation and tradition. Widely considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential saxophonists of his generation, Zenón has also developed a unique voice as a composer and as a conceptualist, concentrating his efforts on perfecting a fine mix between Jazz and his many influences. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Zenón has recorded and toured with a wide variety of musicians including Charlie Haden, Fred Hersch, David Sánchez, Danilo Pérez, Kenny Werner, Bobby Hutcherson and The SFJAZZ Collective.  Zenón has given hundreds of lectures and master classes at institutions all over the world and is a faculty member in the Music & Theater Arts Department at MIT, as well as the current Visiting Scholar for the Harmony and Jazz Composition Department at Berklee College of Music.

 

About Luis Perdomo

Originally from Venezuela, Grammy® nominated pianist, composer, arranger and educator Luis Perdomo moved to NYC in the early 90s and has since established himself as one of the most in-demand musicians on the scene. He has recorded and/or performed with Ravi Coltrane, David Sanchez, Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band, Tom Harrell, John Patitucci, Ray Barretto, Brian Lynch, Robin Eubanks, Dave Douglas, David Weiss and The Cookers, David Gilmore, Ralph Irizarry & Timbalaye, Henry Threadgill and Steve Turre. He has collaborated with Miguel Zenón for 20 years. Perdomo has performed at festivals and venues in over 50 countries and has released nine recordings as a leader. He has also appeared on over 200 recordings as a sideman including, most recently, two Grammy nominated albums: Ravi Coltrane’s Spirit Fiction and Miguel Zenón’s Sonero. In 2002 he earned the 2nd Grand Prix at the 3rd Martial Solal Jazz Piano Competition in Paris.

Entries for the 10th edition are now open 

It’s a huge achievement for us to have reached the 10th Edition of our Global Jazz Contest open to jazz musicians, groups or soloists of all ages, worldwide. This is proof that thanks to you we have put the right passion into this project. This is the continuation of a long journey together but also the beginning of many new goals. 

Application deadline  

30th of January 2024 

10th edition categories 

Amateurs : soloists and bands, all ages, all nationalities welcome, provided the artist is fully independent (i.e. no booking agent, no recording company or publisher); Professionals : all other musicians not belonging to the Amateurs’ category. 

How to participate 

To enter the contest, soloists and groups pay a small registration fee then submit a video performance. Both original and non-original pieces are accepted. Entries will be judged by a panel of 40 international jazz experts including respected journalists, musicians and educators in the field. 

Fees 

Amateur musicians: pay 25 €uros for the first video and 15 €uros for all other video entries.  Professional musicians: pay 50 €uros for the first video and 15 €uros for all other video entries. 

Prizes & Awards 

Prizes go to the top three in each category and include live concerts at Jazz Club Ferrara, Urbino Plays Jazz 2024 and others; scholarship at the International Summer Workshop 2024 in Siena (Italy); a masterclass at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (Netherlands); artistic consulting by John Lumpkin Institute (USA); a live concert at jazzahead! CLUB NIGHT 2024 (Germany) and artistic consulting by Chronograph Records (Canada); as well as special prizes by All About Jazz, Jazzfuel and many others.

El concierto forma parte de la celebración del vigésimo aniversario de Bellas Artes de Caguas

(8 de noviembre de 2023, San Juan, Puerto Rico) – El trompetista, compositor, arreglista, productor y director musical puertorriqueño Luis Perico Ortiz celebrará sus seis décadas en la música con un concierto histórico e irrepetible.

El sábado 13 de enero de 2024 a las 8:30 p.m. en Bellas Artes de Caguas, el ícono de la música tropical Luis Esteban Ortiz Ruiz, conocido cariñosamente como “Perico”, presentará su concierto titulado: “Tocando y Contando Historias”

.Luis Perico Ortiz se ha paseado con éxito por diferentes géneros musicales. Su genialidad artística lo ha llevado a mantener una carrera sostenida y a trabajar con estrellas de la música como: Rubén Blades, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaría, Fania All Stars, por solo mencionar algunos. Sus seis décadas han marcado la historia de la música y lo han convertido en un ícono indiscutible.

Son muchos los artistas que han trabajado con esta institución de la música. Algunos de ellos son más que colegas; son amigos. Y han aceptado participar de este resumen musical de la trayectoria del Maestro Luis Perico Ortiz. Nos referimos a Gilberto Santa Rosa, La India, Tony Vega, Andy Montañez, Moncho Rivera, Henry Santiago, Manolito Rodríguez, Gerardo Rivas, Norberto Vélez y Rubén Blades.

 

El público disfrutará de anécdotas de tantas vivencias juntos, cómo se conocieron, cómo colaboraron, algunos de los temas que marcaron sus vidas, entre otras cosas. Proyecciones en pantallas matizarán las historias y transportarán a la audiencia a esos momentos que merecen ser recordados. La música será el hilo conductor de cada invitado.

Apostando a los nuevos talentos y a las generaciones futuras, Luis Perico ha invitado a dos niños muy especiales para que toquen en este concierto. Arianelys Ortiz es digno ejemplo de que no existen los obstáculos. A pesar de ser novidente y padecer de autismo, toca muy bien el timbal. Y Daniel Torres a su corta edad, ya se ha destacado en la trompeta.

“Este concierto es muy especial para mí. Revisitar canciones que el público ha favorecido, rememorar vivencias y estar rodeados de tantos amigos es indescriptible. Los que se den cita se llevarán un pedazo de mi historia y de mi corazón”, expresa emocionado Luis Perico Ortiz.
