WASHINGTON, D.C. – Due to ongoing concerns about the spread of the coronavirus, the International Jazz Day 2020 Global Host Celebration in Cape Town and other cities across South Africa, including the All-Star Global Concert on April 30, will not take place as scheduled. This decision has been undertaken in response to guidance issued by government and public health officials in South Africa and reflects the high priority that the Institute, its partners and local organizers place on the health and safety of all participating musicians, staff, affiliates and the public.

International Jazz Day would not be possible without the thousands of independent organizers around the world who faithfully help bring the message of this unique music into their communities each year on April 30. We strongly encourage our partners to follow all local public health directives and government guidelines when considering whether to go ahead with an International Jazz Day program. Many partners have already rescheduled their programs for a later date, pending the abatement of the current global pandemic. These postponed events will be gratefully recognized as official celebrations of International Jazz Day.

For over a century, jazz has been a unifying force, rallying people around the world through the universal language of music regardless of the distance between them. With this in mind, International Jazz Day will still go forward on April 30. Though large-scale public concerts, colloquia and other gatherings have for nearly a decade been a hallmark of this celebration, this year we are encouraging organizers to minimize viral transmission by celebrating at home. Resources, information and ideas for celebrating can be found at jazzday.com.

To allow our amazing community of jazz lovers, students and local International Jazz Day leaders a special opportunity to connect with each other, on April 30 the Institute and its partners will organize a virtual forum featuring acclaimed artists and webcasts of exclusive content, offered free of charge. Further details will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Institute extends a special invitation to all of its partners to submit smartphone videos, audio recordings and other virtual expressions of participation to show solidarity with everyone affected by this challenging situation. Submissions will be featured in a free live stream available worldwide as part of the virtual programming on April 30.

Announcing Upcoming Closures at Jazz at Lincoln Center

Jazz at Lincoln Center places a priority on the health and safety of our concertgoers, artists, guests, patrons, program participants, and staff. In response to growing concerns about the spread of COVID-19, Jazz at Lincoln Center has canceled all concerts and classes in Frederick P. Rose Hall, The House of Swing, effective immediately, from Thursday, March 12, 2020 through Wednesday, April 15, 2020. This closure encompasses:

• Concerts and public lectures in Rose Theater, The Appel Room, and the Ertegun Atrium;
• Nightly sets at Dizzy’s Club;
• WeBop and Swing University classes; and
• Middle and High School Jazz Academy classes.

In addition, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Annual Spring Gala, scheduled to take place on April 15 at 8:00PM, will now be held as a virtual Gala, a “Concert for Our Culture” broadcast freely to audiences globally thanks to the support of Gala honorees Clarence Otis and Jacqueline Bradley; JALC’s Chair Robert Appel and the rest of the JALC Board; and other key donors. Against the backdrop of the New York City skyline, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with special guests will perform, in The Appel Room, an evening of music celebrating the centennial of jazz icons Charlie “Bird” Parker and Dave Brubeck.

Jazz at Lincoln Center appreciates the support it has enjoyed and continues to receive from all members of our community and extended family of donors, concertgoers, patrons, students, teachers, parents, vendors, and staff. La orquesta multi-ganadora al GRAMMY® Spanish Harlem Orchestra, se complace en anunciar el lanzamiento de su última producción discográfica The Latin Jazz Project, dicho acontecimiento será el próximo 8 de Mayo del 2020 bajo el sello ArtistShare. Después de vislumbrar su destreza del jazz latino en el transcurso de sus últimas seis producciones. SHO va ‘All In” en The Latin Jazz Project, su primer álbum con un enfoque total hacia el jazz latino. Una letanía de artistas de jazz de primer nivel mundial se unen al conjunto,  como solistas invitados: Kurt Elling, Miguel Zenon, Tom Harrell, Dave Liebman, Bob Mintzer, Joe Locke y otros. Este es un proyecto financiado por fanáticos a través de ArtistShare.

Durante los últimos 17 años, La Spanish Harlem Orchestra se ha ganado su reputación como el principal conjunto de salsa de hoy. Considerado “la Luz principal del movimiento de reconstrucción del género” (Newsday), SHO ha lanzado seis producciones discográficas aclamada por los críticos, incluyendo Anniversary (ArtistShare), que recientemente ganó el premio GRAMMY® al Mejor Álbum Tropical Latino. Esta prestigiosa agrupación se ha presentado en los mejores escenarios del mundo y en casi todos los principales festivales de jazz, como el Newport Jazz Festival, Montreal y Monterey. La SHO ha construido con éxito un puente entre la música latina y el jazz, evidenciado por sus innumerables ovaciones y aplausos en dichos festivales y la aclamación de los críticos. The Latin Jazz Project se basa en ese legado y lleva a la SHO a sumergirse en su totalidad al ámbito del jazz latino. 

The Latin Jazz Project es una sucesión natural para La Spanish Harlem Orchestra. Por ejemplo, el director artístico de la mencionada agrupación, Oscar Hernández, es considerado uno de los pianistas de jazz latino más importantes de su generación. Su carrera histórica se remonta a cuatro décadas que incluye actuaciones y grabaciones con una impresionante lista de grandes músicos latinos, tales como Tito Puente, Machito, Celia Cruz, Conjunto Libre y Willie Colon, entre otros. Hernández pasó seis años compartiendo escenarios con Ray Barreto y apareció en cinco grabaciones incluyendo la afamada producción Rican/Struction. Luego, Hernández se unió a la banda Seis Del Solar de Rubén Blades y finalmente se convirtió en su director musical. Trazando el curso musical para la leyenda de la salsa. Hernández pronto se convirtió en el director musical de Paul Simon, así como el orquestador y arreglista de Gloria Estefan.

Como líder, Hernández ha lanzado dos álbumes de jazz latino bajo el sello Origin: The Art Of Latin Jazz (2017) y Love the Moment (2019), que recibió cuatro estrellas de la revista DownBeat. Ahora, Hernandez ha fusionado su experiencia en el jazz latino con el sonido de la salsa dura de La Spanish Harlem Orchestra para producir un clásico instantáneo en The Latin Jazz Project, la primera grabación de jazz latino del conjunto. “Siempre hemos estado inmersos en la tradición del jazz latino”, dice Hernández, y agrega: “… tiene sentido que finalmente lleguemos a este punto. No podría estar más orgulloso de este proyecto y esta banda”.

La Spanish Harlem Orchestra ha tenido la oportunidad de colaborar con algunos de los grandes del jazz: en 2015, Chick Corea y Joe Lovano aparecieron en su lanzamiento auto-titulado y Anniversary presentó una aparición especial de Randy Brecker. The Latin Jazz Project presenta un nuevo lado de La Spanish Harlem Orchestra. El trombonista y co-productor Doug Beavers menciona:”… realmente queríamos presentar a La SHO con una luz diferente con este proyecto: el de un conjunto de clase mundial que puede ir cara a cara con cualquier agrupación de jazz de renombre en el mundo. Para esto pensamos que el vehículo del jazz latino nos dio el mejor medio para explorar cómo los diferentes maestros del jazz se mezclarán con la orquesta y explorarán el idioma. Los resultados fueron un sonido muy natural y emocionante, como si estos grandes del jazz hubieran actuado con La SHO por muchos años.

Con The Latin Jazz Project, La Spanish Harlem Orchestra se suma a una discografía impresionante que  muestra un legado musical dinámico construido por sus seis lanzamientos anteriores. Estas producciones han obtenido cinco nominaciones al GRAMMY® y tres victorias ( en el 2004 para el segundo álbum Across 110th Street, en el 2010 para Viva La Tradición y, como se ha señalado, el pasado año con Anniversary).

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO, 11 DE MARZO DE 2020--El pianista, director musical y arreglista, Javier Fernández, presenta la producción discográfica “The Eternal Classic III:Tributo a las Reinas” el jueves,12 de marzo de 2020en el Hotel Sheraton distrito de Convenciones en San Juan, Puerto Rico a partir de las 8:00pm.

Fernández, oriundo de Bayamón tiene un extenso bagaje musical como arreglista de grandes exponentes de la salsa como, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Domingo Quiñones, Orquesta La Terrífica, José Lugo y Guasábara Combo,Conjunto Chaney, Orquesta Mulenze,José Alberto “El Canario”,Orquesta La Selecta y Willie Rosario entre muchos otros.

Motivado por su hijo, Javier Fernández Jr.quien trabaja fuertemente a su lado y es el director ejecutivo de sus producciones, nos es de sorprender la calidad de su tercer trabajo junto a su orquesta grande donde en esta ocasión resalta la figura de la mujer. Temas que inmortalizaron a Mirta Silva, La Lupe, Celia Cruz y Graciela Grillo son los que componen dicha producción. Composiciones de la talla de Rafael Hernández, Javier Lozada, Fernando Mulens y Chivirico Dávila, engalanan esta pieza de colección.

Las intérpretes puertorriqueñas Michelle Sotomayor “La Brava”, Melina Almodóvar “La Muñeca de la Salsa”, Lorna Marcano, Yeika Álvarez y Dalí Marie contribuyeron en la vocalización de esta obra maestra. Algunos de los temas son: “Nada”, “Qué te pedí”, “El yerberito” , “Buche y pluma” y “Azúcar negra” entre otros.

Las producciones del maestro Javier Fernández se distinguen por el sonido de grandes virtuosos que contribuyen a la realización de esta joya musical. Entre otros Sammy Vélez y Frankie Pérez en los saxofones, Jesús Alonso en la trompeta, Moisés Nogueras en el trombón, Raúl Rosario en la percusión, Roberto y Pedro Pérez en el bajo, Many Trinidad en la guitarra y el cuatro puertorriqueño y Javier y Javy Fernández Jr. en el piano.

Jazz pianist and composer Fred Hersch will release some of his favorite duo performances with Fred Hersch & Friends, an ongoing series of singles. The first single, available March 6, 2020,  features the Fred Hersch Duo with Miguel Zenón performing Little Suede Shoes. The Fred Hersch Duo with Sara Gazarek, performing Dreams/Darn That Dream, will be out March 20.  The singles will be available from Palmetto Records via iTunes, Spotify and Amazon.

Hersch’s duo performances are legendary. Every May for nearly 15 years, he has hosted a week-long Invitation Series at Jazz Standard in NYC. This year’s Invitation Series runs May 12 – 17.

“My interest in duo performance started when I was at New England Conservatory in the mid-'70s. There wasn't a great student rhythm section there at that time, so I began playing duos in the practice rooms with horn players and fellow pianists,” says Hersch. “Fred Hersch & Friends is designed to release spontaneous musical encounters with musicians I love in various live situations. In this day of auto-tune and endless editing, the performances are released just as they came down.”

“Miguel has been one of my favorites - and since our first duo at the Jazz Standard about five years ago I have had the pleasure of playing with him in other venues when our schedules permit,” says Hersch. “He has a gorgeous sound, a deep knowledge of the language of jazz, impeccable time, big ears and is open to play just about anything with an ‘in the moment’ approach which is so essential to my idea of music-making. Little Suede Shoes is a calypso by Charlie Parker and I just called it on the spot. And I ended up visiting a number of different keys during my solo. The energy is great and the audience at the club loved it.”

“This was my first time playing with Sara Gazarek,” says Hersch. “I was familiar with her from her recordings and the buzz about her has been very strong lately - she was nominated for a 2020 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album. She possesses an ability to be spontaneous, is a first-rate musician and is deeply connected to any lyric she sings. The introduction, Dreams is a freely improvised take on a poem by Sara Teasdale - and it connect seamlessly into the standard Darn That Dream’ The vibe is magic, and her performance is deep. This was recorded at the Mondavi Center in Davis, CA last year, when I started a West Coast version of my Invitation Series there.”

First-ever recording with rhythm section and string quartet

Hersch also plans to release his first-ever album with a string quartet and rhythm section.  The individual pieces on the album are inspired, in part, by aspects of his 20-year vipassana meditation practice. Performing on the album will be Drew Gress on bass and Jochen Ruckert on drums and percussion, as well as an all-female group of New York's finest freelance string players who have appeared on projects by Esperanza Spalding and numerous others, as well as on Hersch's own projects including My Coma Dreams and Leaves of Grass. Joyce Hammann and Laura Seaton, violins; Lois Martin, viola; and Jody Redhage, cello. The album will be released on Palmetto Records in late summer 2020.

“I grew up listening to string quartets as a young musician in Cincinnati. My piano teacher was the wife of the cellist in the famous LaSalle Quartet,” says Hersch. “I used to lie on the rug in their living room while they rehearsed. And when I started studying composition at age eight, I would follow along, hearing how the viola part meshed with the first violin, or the first violin and the cello. My music has always started with four parts, so it’s a natural fit for me.”

A select member of jazz’s piano pantheon, Fred Hersch is a pervasively influential creative force who has shaped the music’s course over more than three decades as an improviser, composer, educator, bandleader, collaborator and recording artist. He has been proclaimed “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade” by Vanity Fair, “an elegant force of musical invention” by The L.A. Times, and “a living legend” by The New Yorker.

A fifteen-time Grammy nominee, Hersch has regularly garnered jazz’s most prestigious awards and has long set the standard for expressive interpretation and inventive creativity, whether through his exquisite solo performances, as the leader of one of jazz’s era-defining trios, or in eloquent dialogue with his deeply attuned duo partners. His acclaimed 2017 memoir, Good Things Happen Slowly (Crown Archetype Books/Random House), was named one of 2017’s Five Best Memoirs by the Washington Post and The New York Times.

Reseña: Richard Peña - Synergy

En su segunda producción discográfica Synergy, Richard Peña le rinde homenaje a los maestros y personas que han marcado su vida y sucarrera.

Su progenitora fue la inspiración para la hermosa balada jazz Flerida. Su compañera Crystal lo inspiró a componer los temas Crystal’s Eyes parte 1 y 2. Sr. Perico es dedicado a la leyenda de la trompeta Luis Perico Ortiz. Mondesert es una composición en agradecimiento al promotor de jazz en República Dominicana Fernando Rodríguez de Mondesert.

Richard también le dedica composiciones a tres profesores. En el enérgico tema Page 38 Richard recuerda los ejercicios en la página 38 del libro Syncopation en la clase con el maestro y percusionista David Rivera. El sonido latinoamericano del tema De Pura Celpa fue inspirado por su profesor en el Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico el bajista Elias Santos Celpa. En la actualidad Richard forma parte del proyecto musical Borinqueneers Jazz Trio junto a Celpa. Por último, con el elegante swing del tema Mattina Richard agradece a otro de sus profesores en el Conservatorio, el guitarrista Fernando Mattina.

Sinergia es “la interacción de dos o más cosas para producir un efecto combinado mayor que la suma de sus efectos separados” (Synergy Press Sheet) y Richard Peña le hace honor al titulo de su nuevo álbum con una colección de composiciones en las que continúa demostrando su capacidad de crear temas memorables y accesibles sin sacrificar la complejidad e intelectualidad melódica y armónica.

Al igual que en su primera producción, Hey Don Rey (2018), la música en Synergy refleja las diversas influencias en la música de Richard, que van desde el swing clásico del jazz en For Some Reason (composición de Jesús Colón), pasando por la fusión con el rock en Willo’s Secret (composición de William García), el elemento latino con influencias de música folclórica de Puerto Rico (plena) en Page 38 y la referencia a ritmos sudamericanos en De Pura Celpa.

En adición a su impresionante técnica, y creatividad, Richard es un guitarrista que a pesar de su juventud (23 años), demuestra una gran madurez en sus composiciones e improvisaciones. En sus fraseos e ideas melódicas, Richard evoca algunos de los Maestros que han influenciado su música como Pat Metheny en Mondesert y en Cysta’s Eyes Part 1 & 2 y Miguel Zenón en Page 38.  

Richard es acompañado por un grupo de jóvenes que poseen la madurez y capacidad musical que requiere una producción de la calidad de Synergy. William García en la batería se destaca en Mondesert y en intercambios (call and response) con el piano y la guitarra en For Some Reason y Sr. Perico. Jesús Colón aporta excelentes solos de bajo en Mattina y en Sr. Perico. Y la nueva adición al grupo Giovanny Rodríguez demuestra su gran técnica y elegancia en las improvisaciones para De Pura Celpa, Page 38, For Some Reason y Willo’s Secret.
