2011 JJA Jazz Awards Nominees Announced; Voting Begins

The Jazz Journalists Association has announced more than 200 finalist nominees in 39 categories of excellence in music creation and music journalism from which winners will be chosen for the JJA’s 15th annual JJA Jazz Awards.

The winners in each category will chosen by the votes of the professional journalist members of the JJA, the non-profit professional organization of jazz writers, broadcasters, photographers and new media producers.

The winners will be announced at a benefit Gala at City Winery in New York City on June 11, 2011, from 1 to 5 pm EDT. The Gala will be video streamed live online at jjaJazzAwards.org.

Nominations for the JJA’s 2011 Jazz Awards were filed by more than 60 professional JJA members over a month-long voting period. Most Awards are for albums issued or music performed from March 15, 2010 to March 15, 2011

Two musicians fom Puerto Rico were nominated this year; Miguel Zenon in the category of Alto Saxophonist of the Year and Bobby Sanabria for Percussionist of the Year.





Other nominees are Sonny Rollins, Joe Lovano, Vijay Iyer, Esperanza Spalding and Jason Moran in the Musician of the Year award category. Moran, 36 years old and winner in 2010 of a prestigious MacArthur fellowship, is nominated for five 2011 JJA Jazz Awards in all — as Musician, Pianist and Composer of the Year, for Record of the Year with his album Ten and for leading the Small Ensemble of the Year, The Bandwagon.

Nominees for Female Singer of the Year are Cassandra Wilson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gretchen Parlato, Rebecca Martin and Roberta Gambarini.

Méndez & Compañía y Berklee College of Music de Boston invitan a todos los estudiantes de música, de 15 años de edad o más, que puedan leer música y entiendan inglés, a que participen de los talleres de jazz auspiciados por Heineken JazzFest Workshop Fund a realizarse en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Carolina del 31 de mayo al 5 de junio de 2011.

Jazz en Puerto Rico

Para las personas que comienzan a explorar el maravilloso mundo del Jazz, tal vez le sorprenda conocer de la gran aportación de los músicos puertorriqueños desde los comienzos del Jass, como se escribía en esos primeros años.

Las primeras grabaciones de jazz se realizan en 1917, y ya en ese año el gran compositor aguadillano Rafael Hernandez, es parte de la orquesta del ejército de los Estados Unidos a cargo del Teniente James Reese Europe. A ésta orquesta se le adjudica la introducción del jazz a Francia y al resto de Europa.

Poco tiempo después, en 1923, Rafael Duchesne graba con la orquesta de Noble Sissle junto a Sidney Bechet, uno de los primeros virtuosos en la historia del jazz. En 1923, Ralph Escudero, tío del compositor puertorriqueño Rafi Escudero, graba con la orquesta de Fletcher Henderson junto a grandes nombres como Coleman Hawkins y Louis Armstrong.

Datos mas conocidos son la relación musical del trombonista vegabajeño Juan Tizol con uno de los genios de la música, Duke Ellington. Juan Tizol fue además de trombonista, el compositor de "jazz standards" como Caravan y Perdido, entre otros. El virtuosismo del bajista Eddie Gomez acompaño por más de una década la música de Bill Evans, uno de los pianistas mas influyentes en el jazz.

Menos conocido es el caso de Rogelio "Ram" Ramirez, pianista y compositor de una de los temas mas reconocidos en el jazz, "Lover Man". Los seguidores del jazz reconocerán este tema en la voz de Billie Holiday entre otras grandes cantantes. Ramirez trabajó también con la gran Ella Fitzgerald.

Por supuesto, no puede hablarse de jazz y especificamente de latin jazz sin mencionar los nombres de los maestros Tito Puente, Ray Barretto y los hermanos Charlie y Eddie Palmieri. Nombres que influenciaron y contribuyeron al surgimiento del genero musical conocido como "Salsa".

La importancia de los músicos de Puerto Rico durante las últimas décadas del siglo 20 y comienzos del siglo 21 es ampliamente reconocida entre los conocedores del jazz. En prácticamente todos los instrumentos relacionados con el jazz, se destaca algún puertorriqueño. Los saxofonistas David Sanchez y Miguel Zenón, el pianista Hilton Ruiz, el virtuoso de la percusión, Giovanni Hidalgo, el trombonista William Cepeda y el bajista John Benitez son solo algunos ejemplos de instrumentistas reconocidos entre los mejores a nivel mundial.

El gran número de talentos desarrollados recientemente en Puerto Rico se debe en gran parte a la gran labor educativa de La Escuela Libre de Música y El Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico. El Conservatorio, que a comienzos del mes de abril celebró su sexta edición del Festival de Jazz, cuenta entre su facultad con grandes maestros como Luis Marin, Eddie Gomez, Aldemar Valentin y Brenda Hopkins Miranda.

Los organizadores del mundialmente reconocido, Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Festival, realizan su aportación en el área educativa otorgando becas a jovenes para continuar estudios en una de las escuelas mas prestigiosas, Berklee College of Music.

Es importante destacar el trabajo de heroes de la radio que han asumido la responsabilidad de mantener viva la música de calidad entre los jovenes. Naphis Torres, con programas en las emisoras del gobierno dedicados al jazz y a la musica de Brasil. Wito Morales "Mister Jazz", con uno de los programas de mayor duración en la radio de Puerto Rico, En Clave de Jazz. La estación de la Universdad de Puerto Rico también mantiene varios espacios dedicados al jazz en su programación. Y por supuesto Vid 90.3, la única estación en Puerto Rico completamente dedicada al jazz. Esta estación localizada en Mayaguez, pueblo oficialmente declarado por su alcalde como la capital del jazz en Puerto Rico, tambien organiza el Mayaguez Jazz Festival y recientemente ha creado la primera revista puertorriqueña de jazz en la web.

Veintisiete piezas de noveles artistas fueron meticulosamente evaluadas para seleccionar la obra de arte que representará el Puerto Rico Heineken JazzFest en su edición 2011, en honor póstumo a Dizzie Gillespie y Chano Pozo. El arte seleccionado "Sonando Alto" es creación de María Alexandra Borrero.

La vigésima primera edición de Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Festival será dedicada a dos leyendas del jazz; Dizzy Gillespie y Chano Pozo. El sábado, tercer día del festival, Poncho Sanchez y su Latin Jazz Band junto a Terrence Blanchard rendirán tributo a Dizzy y Chano. La corta relación musical entre estos dos gigantes de la música revolucionó el mundo del jazz a finales de los años 40's.

Además se presentarán dos ganadores del Grammy en el 2010; Stanley Clarke Band, mejor albúm de jazz instrumental, cerrará la noche del viernes y Dee Dee Bridgewater, mejor albúm de jazz vocal con su homenaje a Billie Holiday, será el segundo acto en la noche del sábado.

El domingo regresa a la tarima del Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Fest, uno de los mejores saxofonistas en el jazz, nuestro David Sanchez con su proyecto Ninety Miles junto Stefon Harris y Christian Scott.

The 21th edition of the Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Fest will be dedicated to jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo and includes the presentation of two grammy winners on 2010, Stanley Clarke Band, (best jazz instrumental album) will close Friday night show. And Dee Dee Bridgewater (best vocal jazz album) will be the second act on Saturday night.

Also on Saturday night, Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band with Terrence Blanchard will play a tribute to Dizzy and Chano. The short relation between these two music giants revolutionized the jazz world in the late 40's.

On Sunday, David Sanchez returns to the Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Fest, this time with his new project Ninety Miles.

Review:
The name of this group, Jazzposteao, comes from a Puertorican food recipe, "arroz mamposteao". The message behind the name is that, like in any good recipe the ingredients in music have to be mixed and cooked perfectly to achieve the desired results, and that is exactly what the musicians of Jazzposteao did on this album. The music of Jazzposteao is an exquisite fusion of flavors; jazz, latin jazz, Puertorican folk music and even rock.

One essential ingredient to create good music is of course, good musicians. Jazzposteao is a trio of talented musicians Edgardo Ojeda on piano, Ariel Robles on bass and Luis Sánchez on drums, accompanied by equally impressive musical guests, guitarrist Antonio Caraballo, Saxophonist Norberto Ortiz and percussionists José E. Santiago and Jafet Murguia.

Pianist Edgardo Ojeda, plays with a superb sense of timing, harmonic and melodic structure that creates a good balance in his improvisations. Bassist Ariel Robles and drummer Luis Sánchez provide an excellent rhythm background to Ojeda's melodies.

Jazzposteao arrangements are ingenious and challenging, yet their sound is very accesible to non jazz listeners. The latin jazz arrangement of Coldplay's "Clocks" and the jazz arrangement of Ennio Morricone's Cinema Paradiso Love Theme are two of the hightlights of the album.

On "Gira", a composition of guitarrist Antonio Caraballo, the groove constantly changes between latin jazz and straight ahead. On Ariel Robles' "La Boya" Norberto Ortiz on sax and Antonio Caraballo on guitar exchange solos over Puertorican Bomba rhythms.

Norberto Ortiz, one of the best sax players from Puerto Rico, plays some good improvisations over the intense latin rhythms of "Jazposteao". The album also includes wonderful renditions of three Puertorican classics. The beautiful melodies of Felipe Rosario Goyco "Madrigal", and the contagious rhythms of Eddie Palmieri's "Puerto Rico" and Rafael Hernandez "Cumbanchero".

Review:
Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Pedro Bermudez is a pianist with lot of experience playing with salsa legends like Willie Rosario, Roberto Roena and the Puerto Rican Latin Jazz group Batacumbele.

The opening track Yuba a Santurce is precisely an homage to Pedro's town, Santurce. This is a piece with Bomba and Jazz fusion, reminiscent of the music of another great Jazz musician from Puerto Rico, trombonist William Cepeda. Good improvisations by Ivan Renta on sax and Oscar Stagnaro on bass.

Pedro plays the fender rhodes en La numero site, and Mike Arroyo also from Puerto Rico plays the guitar. The track breaks into kind of a montuno in the end. El Jarriero feels like a slow mambo, this time with another good bassist, Ruben Rodriguez, excellent trumpet by Nelson Jaime, who is also the recording engineer, and Richie Flores spectacular as always on congas.

Pedro great technique and experience can be fully appreciated on latin tracks like ALC. It is amazing the quality and quantity of musicians playing on this CD. On the more traditional Jazz track, The Dreamer, the bassist is Eddie Gomez. Some might remember Eddie as the bass player with Bill Evans. And in this format of just piano, bass and drums the music here reminds me at times of the legendary Jazz pianist.

Pedro goes back to the Fender Rhodes in the Samba influenced Bombaiao with Felipe Salles on sax, Oscar Stagnaro back on bass and master brazilian percussionist/drummer Duduka Da Fonseca.

Redentor includes another virtuosic bassist from Puerto Rico, Gabriel Rodriguez. A young but experienced musician currently playing with Charlie Sepulveda and Jazz trio San Juan Collective.

Duduka also plays on Chorinho para Maria, a piece with traditional brazilian rhythms where Pedro shows his versitality as a composer and improviser, even quoting in his improvisation recognized brazilian songs like Samba da minha terra.

All compositions are originals by Pedro Bermudez except Jobim Caminhos Cruzados. Ana Baiana provides the wonderful interpretation and voice on this one. No limits and Long Walk have two of the more interesting arrangements with nice tempo changes.

Ventana al Jazz, Dicembre 26

La serie de conciertos Ventana al Jazz auspiciado por Heineken tuvo un cierre espectacular el pasado domingo 26 de diciembre. Con una selección musical ideal para la epoca de Navidad Candido Reyes y su Guiro Jazz subieron al escenario con su exquisita fusión de Jazz con música tradicional de Puerto Rico como el seis, la danza y la plena, un ejemplo es su magnifico arreglo en ritmo de plena del clasico de Juan Tizol, Caravan. Pero el repertorio de Guiro Jazz tambien incluye influencias de Cuba (Chucho Valdes) y de Brasil. Uno de los mejores momentos de la noche fue su interpretación del tema Brigas Nunca Mais del maestro compositor/pianista brasileiro Tom Jobim.

El maestro William Cepeda y su Afrorican Jazz, continua la velada de buena música con su fusión de bomba y jazz. William es uno de los mejores trombonistas en el jazz y en los últimos años se ha desarrollado como un excelente compositor, arreglista y director de orquesta, como queda demostrado en su primera pieza, basada en El Cumbanchero de Rafael Hernandez. Sus composiciones harmonica y ritmicamente estimulantes tambien incluyen fusiones con aguinaldos y otros ritmos de Puerto Rico. Nada mejor que buena música para terminar un año 2010 lleno de retos y comenzar el 2011 con energia positiva.

Buika powerful voice, amazing feeling, beautiful smile and sense of humor captivated the audience at her first concert in Puerto Rico. Buika is a unique artist that blends in her music a diversity of influences. In her voice and music one might hear the voices of Africa, the phrasing of the Spanish Flamenco, Jazz, Soul and the rhythms and feelings of Latin America and the Caribbean. The concert setting was simple and intimate, for a great artist like Buika that's enough, just her voice, the masterful piano of Ivan Lewis, Fernado Favier on percussion and Dany Noel on bass.

Most of the music on this concert were from Buika most recent album El Ultimo Trago with Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes, Soledad, Sombras, Cruz de olvido, En el ultimo trago, Un mundo raro, Luz de luna. A wonderful tribute to Mexican singer Chavela Vargas. The concert also included music from her previous albums, favorites of the public like, Volver Volver, Mentirosa and Nostalgias. After two hours filled with laughter and good music and a deserved standing ovation, Buika came back to sing Jodida pero contenta and a solo interpretation of Ojos Verdes.
