Internationally renowned saxophonist/composer Miguel Zenón announces the release of his Grammy Nominated album “Sonero: The Music of Ismael Rivera” on Vinyl

  • Internationally renowned saxophonist/composer Miguel Zenón announces the release of his Grammy Nominated album “Sonero: The Music of Ismael Rivera” on Vinyl.

The Limited Edition Double LP, which will be available exclusively on his website http://www.miguelzenon.com, includes the original artwork and liner notes from the album. It features 11 tracks (all arranged and produced by Zenón), celebrating the music of the great Puerto Rican icon, also known as “Maelo” to his many admirers. Along with Zenón is his long running Quartet, with Luis Perdomo on Piano, Hans Glawischnig on Bass and Henry Cole on Drums.

“In a career full of powerful, relevant albums, this is one of the best Zenon’s ever made….Zenon has never played more eclectically, nor Perdomo more tersely, than each does here: what a great band, what a great album.” - New York Music Daily

“Mr. Zenón’s alto saxophone sounds as seductive, earthy and nimble as did Rivera’s voice; it suggests, alternatively, grit or pure beauty…Mr. Zenón and his colleagues honor Rivera by doing what great soneros and jazz musicians do with rich repertoire: listen closely and lovingly, and find new ways in.” – Larry Blumenfeld, Wall Street Journal

“If you know Rivera’s repertoire, you’ll recognize certain motifs and chord changes; if not, you’ll savor the ultra-sophisticated work of one of the most accomplished and seasoned small groups in jazz.” – Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

L’Équipe Spectra will not present the 2020 Francos de Montreal and Festival International de Jazz de Montréal

L’Équipe Spectra will not present the 2020 Francos de Montreal and Festival International de Jazz de Montréal
Due to the coronavirus pandemic and following the measures imposed by government authorities, which include cancelling non-essential activities and restricting entry of non-residents to the territory, L'Équipe Spectra announces that the 2020 editions of Les Francos de Montréal (scheduled for June 12) and the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal (scheduled for June 25) will not be presented this summer.

Jacques Primeau, General Manager of Les Francos de Montréal and Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, had this to say: “Over the past four decades, thanks to our teams who deploy their efforts and creativity to offer the public a unique experience, the Jazz Festival and Francos have become two of Montreal's flagship summer events. This decision, which was made with our private partners and the government, was therefore not an easy one, but it had become necessary in order to protect the public, the artists and our employees. We would like to thank the government for its understanding and outstanding collaboration in this most difficult time.”

Optimism and Realism

Despite the troubling situation facing the entire festival industry, L'Équipe Spectra’s management views the future with optimism, while remaining very realistic. “The next few months will be decisive for the future of the Festivals,” said Jacques Aubé, President of L’Équipe Spectra. “We will invest all our energy and creative strengths to find solutions. We are confident that, with the support of our employees and all our partners, we will be able to get through this ordeal and will soon have these creators of economic, tourism, cultural and social benefits back on track for our province. Until then, let’s collectively pursue our efforts in order to win this battle,” he concluded.

To ticket holders for indoor shows at festivals

Specific information for each event will be communicated as soon as possible. In the meantime, you are invited to keep your tickets pending further information.

Due to concerns regarding the coronavirus, the International Jazz Day 2020 Global Host Celebration in Cape Town & other cities across South Africa, including the All-Star Global Concert on 4/30, will not take place as scheduled. Interactive activities will announced soon.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Due to ongoing concerns about the spread of the coronavirus, the International Jazz Day 2020 Global Host Celebration in Cape Town and other cities across South Africa, including the All-Star Global Concert on April 30, will not take place as scheduled. This decision has been undertaken in response to guidance issued by government and public health officials in South Africa and reflects the high priority that the Institute, its partners and local organizers place on the health and safety of all participating musicians, staff, affiliates and the public.

International Jazz Day would not be possible without the thousands of independent organizers around the world who faithfully help bring the message of this unique music into their communities each year on April 30. We strongly encourage our partners to follow all local public health directives and government guidelines when considering whether to go ahead with an International Jazz Day program. Many partners have already rescheduled their programs for a later date, pending the abatement of the current global pandemic. These postponed events will be gratefully recognized as official celebrations of International Jazz Day.

For over a century, jazz has been a unifying force, rallying people around the world through the universal language of music regardless of the distance between them. With this in mind, International Jazz Day will still go forward on April 30. Though large-scale public concerts, colloquia and other gatherings have for nearly a decade been a hallmark of this celebration, this year we are encouraging organizers to minimize viral transmission by celebrating at home. Resources, information and ideas for celebrating can be found at jazzday.com.

To allow our amazing community of jazz lovers, students and local International Jazz Day leaders a special opportunity to connect with each other, on April 30 the Institute and its partners will organize a virtual forum featuring acclaimed artists and webcasts of exclusive content, offered free of charge. Further details will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Institute extends a special invitation to all of its partners to submit smartphone videos, audio recordings and other virtual expressions of participation to show solidarity with everyone affected by this challenging situation. Submissions will be featured in a free live stream available worldwide as part of the virtual programming on April 30.
