Ruben Caban
Tales From The Trunk
Trombonist Ruben Caban’s new release “Tales From The Trunk”, is an ambitious new project inspired by the everyday musical experiences musicians live throughout their careers as they load their trunks with their tools and aspirations. It fuses an array of improvisational styles, from straight ahead standards such as Kenny Dorham’s "Lotus Blossom” and JJ Johnson’s infamous version of Jule Styne’s "Time After Time" to original large ensemble compositions in Funk, Fusion, Chacarera and Latin Jazz recorded by both small ensembles and a full Big Band.
To tell this “tale” Caban dug deep into his trunk and features original compositions and arrangements by himself, such the title track “The Trunk” as well as various composers ranging from original music by Grammy award winning composer Rafael Valencia to a reimagined arrangement by Alex Pope Norris of the timeless classic “Obsesion” by Pedro Flores. Also included is Wayne Shorter’s “Speak No Evil”, showcasing the latin side of the Jazz giant’s composition.
