La sociedad de conciertos culmina exitosamente su Temporada 2022-2023 y abraza nuevos ofrecimientos educativos de carácter social

 

San Juan, Puerto Rico – Pro Arte Musical, en plena etapa final de su sonora Temporada 2022-2023, presenta oportunamente un programa de concierto liderado por Josué Casillas, principal flautista de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Puerto Rico (OSPR), con la participación y vuelta a la escena nacional del célebre pianista y director ucraniano Stanislav Khristenko el próximo 10 de junio de 2023 en la Sala Sinfónica Pablo Casals del Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferré (CBA) en Santurce. El programa refleja las influencias culturales del mundo moderno sobre los estilos composicionales para el instrumento de la flauta, reuniendo obras de Sergei Prokofiev, Francis Poulenc y Mike Mower. El esperado recital, originalmente pautado para octubre de 2022 y pospuesto tras el paso del huracán Fiona, fungirá como acto solidario ante la compleja situación humanitaria que ha padecido en tiempos recientes el país de Ucrania y toda su comunidad alrededor del mundo. Casillas, artista Miyazawa, fungió como flautista principal en Houston Grand Opera y en The Symphony of Southeast Texas. Es miembro de Camerata Caribe, conjunto en residencia del Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico, institución donde también ejerce como profesor de flauta. Khristenko, artista Steinway, se ha presentado como pianista en varias de las principales salas de concierto a nivel global, despuntando recientemente su carrera como director orquestal. Multipremiado en una treintena de certámenes internacionales y participado como solista junto a las más renombradas orquestas, confundó el Kharkiv Music Fest y la Nova Sinfonietta Chamber Orchestra en su ciudad natal.

“Este cierre guarda mucha significación. Va más allá de un gesto solidario a la comunidad ucraniana en la isla, sino que también es una muestra de inmenso respeto y apreciación a nuestra comunidad artística en general cuyas gestas y extraordinarias ejecuciones jugaron un papel protagónico en esta temporada que supuso grandes satisfacciones para nuestra organización” expresó José Camuy, director ejecutivo de Pro Arte Musical. La cartelera reunió favorablemente los conciertos del guitarrista Arturo Castro Nogueras, la soprano Elizabeth Caballero junto al pianista y productor José Negroni, la presentación debut del conjunto Victory Players, el violinista Philippe Quint junto a la OSPR, y el recital más reciente de la Serie Nuevos Virtuosos con las estudiantes Alejandra Vega Roque y Lucila Zavala acompañadas al piano por Ernesto Busigó Montero. Por su parte, la entidad celebra el alcance de su oferta educativa bajo el Programa Música Abierta que logró talleres y conciertos didácticos en los pueblos de Humacao y Caguas, y las comunidades de Cupey, Miramar, Hato Rey, Caimito, Santurce y el Viejo San Juan. A estos ofrecimientos se incorporarán próximamente servicios de musicoterapia abarcando más sectores y poblaciones en riesgo.

(17 de mayo de 2023, San Juan, Puerto Rico) El prestigioso músico, compositor, arreglista, productor y director musical Luis Perico Ortiz inicia audiciones para su instituto de música y empresarismo.

Luis Perico Ortiz se ha paseado con éxito por diferentes géneros musicales. Su genialidad musical lo ha llevado a mantener una carrera sostenida y a trabajar con estrellas de la música como: Rubén Blades, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaría, Fania All Stars y Barry Maniilow, por solo mencionar algunos. Sus más de cinco décadas han marcado la historia de la música y lo han convertido en un ícono indiscutible.

 

El trompetista pertenece a la primera clase graduada de la Escuela Libre de Música Ernesto Ramos Antoni en San Juan, Puerto Rico. Emulando esa labor titánica de Ramos Antonini, Perico desarrolló su nuevo Instituto de Música Popular y Empresarismo Luis Perico Ortiz (IMPELPO)

IMPELPO comenzará operaciones en septiembre de manera virtual y el año entrante de forma presencial. Este instituto sin fines de lucro tiene como filosofía ofrecer una enseñanza musical de primera y las herramientas necesarias a cada joven de manera que pueda aprender a crear una empresa basada en su talento.

La oferta académica incluye talleres en Producción Musical, Improvisación, Historia de la música afrocaribeña y psicología de la música, Clases grupales de todos los instrumentos de orquesta de lenguaje popular, Arreglo, Orquestación y Composición, Talleres de Big Band, Orquesta y otros. Además, se ofrecerán talleres y cursos de empresarismo.

 

IMPELPO también becará a estudiantes de escasos recursos “Necesitamos que nuestros jóvenes músicos se preparen académicamente y que también desarrollen la parte empresarial. Que conozcan el mar de oportunidades que existen en la música que les permitirá crear fuentes de empleo y sostenibilidad a nivel personal y comunitario”, explica Luis Perico Ortiz.

Para audicionar, los estudiantes deben tener cuatro años de estudios teóricos y técnicos de su instrumento o voz. Tienen que realizar un video y enviarlo antes del 5 de junio próximo. Las instrucciones de lo que debe incluir el video se encuentran en el siguiente enlace:

GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY Award-Winning Cuban Vocalist AyméeNuviola New Latin Jazz Album Havana Nocturne 

Havana Nocturne, a new album by renowned musical artist and multi-GRAMMY Award winner Aymée Nuviola.

A master song interpreter with universal appeal, Aymée Nuviola is one of the most celebrated artists of her generation. Known as the La Sonera del Mundo, Nuviola’s powerful artistry and captivating performance style has won hearts all over the world. Throughout her storied career (which includes Nuviola’s starring turn as the titular role in the Celia Cruz inspired Telemundo series Celia, 2017), she has consistently kept Cuban music at the forefront while displaying impressive musical versatility. 

In recent years, Nuviola has made overtures into the jazz realm, notably with two recent recordings alongside GRAMMY winning pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Last year, the duo won a Latin GRAMMY for Live in Marciac (5Passion, 2022), and it’s precursor, Viento y Tiempo: Live at the Blue Note Tokyo (Top Stop Music, 2020) went on to gain a GRAMMY nomination too. Now with Havana Nocturne, Nuviola displays her assured command of the jazz language while paying tribute to her enchanting native city of Havana.  Featuring acclaimed pianist Kemuel Roig, this elegant 13-track collection takes its cues from filin, a Cuban musical movement described as jazz-influenced romantic song that rose to prominence in the early-mid 20th century in Havana. 

Influenced by the cultural climate of the United States, the filin movement took hold in Cuba in the late 1940’s and carried through to the early 1960’s. The word itself is derived from “feeling”, and its musical roots can be traced to the bolero and canción. A rhapsodic time, this movement was transformative for Havana as a constellation of singers and composers of this style emerged. Influenced by the popular jazz vocalists of the day, dashed with some Debuyssian impressionist, as well as the traditional Cuban son and bolero, el filin celebrated the beauty of the city, and gatherings around this music became the centerpiece of Cuban social life with jam sessions, house parties and concerts ubiquitous. 

Though born after the height of the filin movement, this powerful and emotional music reached Nuviola as a young girl and made an indelible impression. Since the earliest days of her professional career, filin and bolero have been present in her music and have served as a throughline across her many recordings and live shows. She has even earned the moniker The Voice of El Filin of Her Generation. On Havana Nocturne, Nuviola comes full circle as she brings this style to the forefront.  

Nuviola’s key collaborator is Kemuel Roig – an exceptional pianist whose 2020 jazz debut Genesis earned him a four star review from Jazzwise Magazine. Produced by Paulo Simeón, Havana Nocturne finds Nuviola and Roig among an intimate ensemble made up of Lowell Ringel on bass, Hilario Bell on drums, José “Majito” Aguilera on percussion and Julián Ávila on guitar. Throughout the gripping program, Nuviola takes listeners on an engaging journey through the enchanting streets of Havana, and offers her singular take on classic compositions by iconic Cuban composers José Antonio Méndez (“Me faltabas tú” and “Novia Mía”), César Portillo de la Luz (“Realidad y Fantasía”), Ángel Díaz (“Rosa mustia”), and Nino Rivera (“El Jamaiquino’). Nuviola pays tribute to these musical pioneers while also shining a light on their successors including Marta Valdés (“Tú no sospechas”), Frank Domínguez (“Imágenes”) and Meme Solís, whose early bolero “De la misma forma”, remained unrecorded until now. A particular highlight is her emotive performance of “Me contaron de ti”  by the great Cuban-American composer René Touzet.

Havana Nocturne features the work of non-Cuban composers as well, and each track uncovers a new side of the charismatic and seemingly limitless Nuviola. “Obsesión” by Puerto Rican composer Pedro Flores begins as a bolero before moving to a driving and seductive cha-cha. On “Perfidia” by Alberto Domínguez of Mexico, and the closing duo tango “Vete de mí” (by Argentinian pianist/composer Virgilio Expósito), Nuviola displays an impressive fluidity while traversing genres and styles with ease. Her original contribution “Quédate” is an ode to the filinero style, and one of the album’s most endearing performances.

The ninth edition of the 7 Virtual Jazz Club contest officially begins April 17, 2023.

9th edition Categories 

Under 25: soloists and bands aged 25 years or younger. All nationalities welcome, provided the artist is fully independent (i.e. no booking agent, no recording company or publisher); Pros & Amateurs: all other musicians not belonging to the Under 25 category. 

How To Apply 

To enter the contest, soloists and groups pay a small registration fee then submit a video performance. Both original and non-original pieces are accepted. Entries will be judged by a panel of 38 international jazz experts including respected journalists, musicians and educators in the field. 

Prizes & Awards 

Prizes go to the top three in each category and include live concerts at Jazz Club Ferrara, Un tubo Jazz Club (Siena) and others; scholarship at the International Summer Workshop 2024 in Siena (Italy); a masterclass at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (Netherlands); artistic consulting by John Lumpkin Institute (USA); a live concert at jazzahead! CLUB NIGHT 2024 (Germany), artistic consulting by Chronograph Records (Canada) and Fully Altered Media (USA); as well as special prizes by All About Jazz, Jazzfuel Stilletto Productions and others.

Memorial Service to Celebrate the Life and Music of Johnny Almendra

A Memorial Service to Celebrate the Life and Music of Johnny Almendra will be held at St. Peter's Church, 619 Lexington Ave (E. 54th St), NYC on Monday, May 15, 2023.  The doors open at 6:00 PM and the program will start at 6:30 PM. Johnny, who passed away on November 21, 2022, was a titan of Salsa and Latin jazz, a regular member of ensembles led by Mongo Santamaria, McCoy Tyner, Don Byron, and Willie Colon, among many others.  In addition, Johnny's own band, Johnny Almendra y Los Jovenes del Barrio, was an innovative Charanga group and one of the best Latin bands of the 1990s. Johnny was also a generous teacher and mentor to generations of musicians.

The memorial service will include ensembles playing tribute to Johnny's time with Mongo Santamaria, performing with Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe, and his own band Los Jovenes del Barrio. There will be special musical guests, speakers, videos and a photographic tribute. Food and beverages will be served afterward.

We have set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses.  Any additional funds will be used to make a charitable contribution in Johnny's name to benefit musicians in need.
